Philosophy of care | I believe most chronic illnesses we struggle with are preventable, but also realize daily life can inhibit our ability to make healthy lifestyle choices or find appropriate care. My priority is staying up to date on medical developments that can help slow or even reverse a chronic disease. As your doctor my goal is helping you and your family find a path that works for you and improves the trajectory of your life. | Why I entered medicine | I initially thought about a career in medicine while studying high school biology and being fascinated by the intricacy of mechanisms governing the human body. I also was influenced by my own experience with the health care system while hospitalized for appendicitis as a young teenager. In college I majored in neuroscience and behavior, and later worked in a research lab studying autoimmune disorders. Family medicine/primary care provides me the opportunity to form long-term relationships with patients like you, creating a bond for working together on your physical and mental well-being. | Community involvement | During my residency near Boston, I worked with under-insured patients by performing pre-school physicals for children and then connected their families to resources for establishing consistent care. In medical school, I volunteered to teach 5th graders at a Philadelphia public school about healthy lifestyle choices involving nutrition, exercise and mental health. I plan to pursue similar endeavors in the Lehigh Valley. | Personal interests | I enjoy reading or listening to books/podcasts in my free time, which is usually when I drive or during vacations. Fiction of all kinds and self-improvement/self-help are my favorite genres. My go-to exercises are running and yoga. Recently, I have found kayaking to be very peaceful and rejuvenating. I love to travel, spend time with family and friends, and tell stories about trying to keep up with my creative husband and rambunctious cat Olaf. Philosophy of care | My main goal is to treat every patient as a person with kindness and respect. I’m passionate about preventative care and educating patients about lifestyle changes that help people live longer, healthier and happier lives. I like to take a holistic approach that includes diet, exercise and helping the body heal itself, as opposed to just using medications. I prescribe them when necessary, but a lot of chronic conditions can be improved or prevented with lifestyle changes alone. I think the extra time I spend counseling and educating patients about caring for their bodies is definitely worth it to their health and well-being. | Why I entered medicine | My grandfather was a physician with his own practice. He had a passion for medicine that I believe was passed on to me. He just loved caring for patients and getting to know them. He literally took care of whole families, delivering babies and caring for each family member throughout their entire lives – a true family practitioner. I saw from a young age how rewarding a career in medicine could be. Fortunately, I found that I really enjoyed studying the sciences. Biology was my favorite subject in high school, and I majored in it in college. I took a year off before applying to medical school to work for Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. I triaged all patient phone calls and handled OR scheduling. It wasn’t a clinical role, but working closely with patients showed me without a doubt that I wanted to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps. | Community involvement | I have two small children who take a lot of my time when I’m not working, so I give to the community when I can. In college I volunteered with an organization called Dress for Success that helps homeless women dress for job interviews. During my residency, I volunteered at high schools and colleges giving sports physicals. I was a competitive figure skater when I was younger, so I love working with young athletes, talking to them about preventing injuries and staying in peak condition. It’s truly a joy watching them achieve their highest athletic goals. | Personal interests | I love spending time with my two kids and my husband. We like being active outdoors, going for walks as a family and exploring the area. I still skate for fun, and also stay in shape by practicing yoga and spinning (riding a stationary bike). My kitchen is another happy place for me. I love baking and cooking Italian food. My grandparents were born in the United States but met in Rome where my grandfather went to medical school and my grandmother worked for the American embassy. I grew up hearing all about Italian culture and cuisine. In my quieter moments, there’s nothing like a good novel. I’ve always enjoyed losing myself in a book more than watching TV. It’s a wonderful escape and a great way to unwind. Dr. Stockhausen is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). Philosophy of care | I like to gab with my patients. Good medicine takes time. Each individual is extraordinarily complex. You have a spirit, a personality, societal pressures - all these different factors play a role in a person's health. I try to account for all of it. I think there's an extraordinary untapped potential in the therapeutic value of the patient-physician relationship. I look to release the power of that relationship. In casual conversation, you can learn a lot about someone and share something about yourself. A better relationship means better care for the patient. I'm interested in preventive care – diet, sleep, alcohol, smoking and cancer prevention. For a person to change his or her personal way of life is one of the most difficult things. I ask my patients if they're ready, and then I go as far as I can with them and give them the resources they need. | Why I entered medicine | I was a professional musician – a guitarist. But I soon discovered I was not so musical! I was only able to go so far. Medicine is a DeHoff family tradition. There are medical diplomas in my family going back to the Civil War: my father, my grandfather and my great-great-grandfather - this goes way back! It's a very important role to play in people's lives. It's more mainstream and more stable than my music career. It also has more opportunities to help people. | Community involvement | I sometimes perform jazz guitar in the Lehigh Valley. | Personal interests | I like a simple life and enjoying the moments of every day. My wife sells old and rare books. We enjoy hunting for books together at book stores and yard sales. Over the years, I have been assembling a comprehensive collection of books on medical history. I also enjoy collecting vinyl records, mostly American jazz records, and playing jazz guitar. Dr. Dehoff is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). His top areas of expertise are Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young, Hypertension, and Familial Hypertension.

What is the definition of Type 2 Diabetes (T2D)?

Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong (chronic) disease in which there is a high level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.

Which doctors treat type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is usually managed by a primary care doctor. This doctor helps with routine medical care, including checkups, physical exams, lab tests, and prescriptions. Some people living with type 2 diabetes might also see an endocrinologist, which is a specialist who treats conditions related to hormones. A care team for diabetes can also include dietitians, who help with healthy eating, and diabetes educators, who teach how to manage the condition. Sometimes, a foot doctor, eye doctor, or dentist are involved because diabetes can affect the feet, eyes, teeth, and gums.

How often should a person with type 2 diabetes see their doctor?

People with type 2 diabetes should usually see their doctor every 3 to 6 months. These visits are important to track blood sugar levels, adjust medications if needed, and check for any complications like nerve damage or heart problems. If the person’s blood sugar is not well controlled or if they have other health issues, the doctor might recommend more frequent visits. Regular check-ups help prevent serious problems and keep the condition under control.

What are the symptoms of type 2 diabetes?

Common symptoms of type 2 diabetes include:

      • Feeling very thirsty
      • Needing to urinate a lot
      • Feeling very tired
      • Having blurry vision
      • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
      • Cuts and wounds take longer to heal

Some people with type 2 diabetes have no symptoms at all, especially in the early stages. That’s why regular screening is important, especially for people at higher risk.

How is type 2 diabetes diagnosed?

Doctors diagnose type 2 diabetes with blood tests. The most common test is the A1C, which measures a person’s average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. An A1C of 6.5% or higher means the person has diabetes. Other tests include the fasting blood sugar test, which checks sugar levels after not eating for 8 hours, and the oral glucose tolerance test, which measures how the body handles sugar after drinking a special sugary drink. If the results show high blood sugar, a doctor may diagnose type 2 diabetes. For people without diabetes, a safe blood sugar level is usually between 70 and 99 mg/dL before eating and under 140 mg/dL after meals.

How is type 2 diabetes treated?

Type 2 diabetes is usually treated by making healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight. Some people might also need medication to help control their blood sugar. This can include pills or insulin shots. Regular monitoring of blood sugar is important to make sure the treatment is working. Managing diabetes can also help prevent complications, like heart disease, kidney problems, and nerve damage.

When should I see a Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor near Laurys Station, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor near Laurys Station, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctors near Laurys Station, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctors near Laurys Station, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor near Laurys Station, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor near Laurys Station, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
